The lifespan of a pair of pointe shoes differs depending on level of the dancer, hours spent en pointe, and what brand of shoes you have. Most professionals go through a pair each performance- that’s a whole lot of shoes! This quick 2 minute video below, by Altin Kaftira, is called The (un)making of the pointe shoe, and it gives you an inside look into what goes into making a pair of pointe shoes, through the Freed factory in London, and Dutch National Ballet dancer Yumiko Takeshima.

Disclaimer:  Since these are professional dancers, and companies typically pay for their shoes, I would not recommend doing any of the crazy things they do to break in their shoes! Remember, yours should last longer than that, so it would be best to break them in with your own feet, instead of banging them against a brick wall!
