Two weekends ago, I took part in Elements Contemporary Ballet‘s very first out-of-state performance!
Managing Director Joe Caruana (also dancer, resident choreographer, and my favorite Elements dance partner) had submitted a piece for the McCallum Theater Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival in Palm Desert, CA. His pas de deux, Angel, was one of 11 selected from 100 entries for a competition to win a Grand prize of $5000 or a paid engagement at the McCallum Theater. Everyone here at Elements was so excited that we had been chosen. So Joe, our Artistic Director Mike Gosney and I all packed our bags and flew to California!
I was actually an understudy for the piece, and found out only a few weeks before the competition that I was going to be dancing the role with Joe. That meant we had a lot of rehearsing to do, but it definitely paid off; we had an amazing performance! The three of us were so proud of the way we danced the piece. Despite getting a ton of positive feedback from audience members, we didn’t place in the competition, but we did win a cash prize for being finalists. In the end, we were just happy that we had the chance to show the company off in front of a new audience, perform in a beautiful theater, and dance alongside some other really talented companies.
I had a great time and I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to be in this show. Plus, a three day weekend in Palm Desert was not a bad bonus! It was a trip I’ll never forget.
For those of you that want to check out the piece, here is a rehearsal video:
